Observations at a Laundromat

waiting—for—your—dog—by—he—tree expressions
crowded—rush—hour—subway awkwardness
to the washer—dryer rumble hum of human necessity
as the mellowing dusk gives way to stark fluorescents

a man flagellating in the corner
speaking in a tongue known only to himself
yelling at a half Indian hippie who’s
“dancing” her baby to sleep with bells

young women chatter away secret gossip
or look aimlessly at anything but another person
flitting around in fickle hidden worlds
— frozen faces … frozen hearts
spinning in time to dryer time

middle-aged couple sits and stares in different directions
wandering in little hidden worlds
.. he breaks the cool silence — “gotta cigarette?”
then off to Bronco—buster—pinball
filling space of missed moment of muddled awareness

a familiar almost-lover’s face appears among the crowd
an exchange of updated soon forgotten tidbits
… then off into the night
leaving behind the whirling colors
of human hearts and human minds
awkwardly awaiting clean sheets.
