Musings about Levels of Learning

Levels of Cognitive Engagement (Learning)

a-LevelsofCognition.jpg

This perspective on learning is portrayed here as a reverse hierarchy in order to capture some sense of the depth of each dimension of learning. However, unlike most hierarchies, one level or layer is not more important than another. All layers are important aspects of learning. We don’t always tap into the deeper layers, but during our lifetimes, we should be tapping into deep levels in certain contexts.

Questions to Ponder:
  • What are some personal examples of learning you’ve experienced at each level?
  • What was you experience (feelings, etc.) of such learning at each level?
  • What are the implications for teaching and our own personal motivations for learning?
